FORT WORTH — A man posing as an Uber driver picked up two Texas Christian University students near campus early Sunday morning, according to a campus-wide email alert sent Sunday evening.
According to the email issued by TCU Police, the man convinced two young women to get in his car just before 2 a.m. Sunday after saying a scheduled passenger cancelled.
The man “initiated inappropriate conversations” with the students and attempted to hug one of them before dropping them off, according to the alert.
“The male left without asking for compensation for the ride, leaving the females to conclude that he was not in fact an authorized Uber driver,” TCU Police said.
Students who use the car service were suprised to learn someone would be so brazen during a high-traffic area like campus.
“If I need a ride home when I’m out with my friends, that puts my life in danger,” said senior Abel Reyes.
Vetted Uber driver Bryan Nimmo says, “You just have to make sure you’re getting in the car with someone you requested, not just someone on the street.”
Nimmo says he frequently picks up fares in Fort Worth and near TCU during late-night hours when people are often looking for safe rides homes from bars or restaurants.
He recommends always keeping the information associated with a driver when a “pin” is accepted. He underwent a background check before the company allowed him to drive under their banner.
“You’re given the picture, a name, a vehicle and a license plate,” he says.
